It is 1943, with war in the air and the world of adults still largely a mystery to a group of children growing up in the Forest of Dean. The different children have different fears and temperaments. They tease and play, argue, and chase a squirrel. It is still a world of considerable innnocence, but innocence comes tumbling down in an awful climax.
